The Witcher 3 Remastered combat guide
Use the correct sword, observe the animation, dodge area attacks, parry only readable humanoid attacks, and add the sign or oil that directly counters the enemy.
01 / Prerequisites
Prepare before leaving
- ✓Complete the combat tutorial.
- ✓Equip a steel and silver sword.
- ✓Carry at least one healing item and one defensive sign setup.
02 / Route
Follow the path in order
- 01
Choose the right sword
Use steel against humans and nonhumans, and silver against monsters. The wrong sword turns a routine fight into a damage race.
- 02
Read the animation
Dodge sideways for committed lunges and backward only when the attack has short reach. Remastered animation timing rewards late reads over repeated early rolls.
- 03
Control the group
Reposition before attacking so you fight one or two enemies at a time. Use Aard, bombs or terrain to interrupt the rest.
- 04
Add direct counters
Use Yrden for specters, Igni where regeneration or flammable effects matter, and the correct oil for the monster class.
- 05
Preserve stamina
Keep enough stamina for one emergency dodge or Quen. Emptying the bar on offence is the most common cause of avoidable deaths.
03 / Common mistakes
Avoid the expensive reset
Do not parry monsters as if they were human swordsmen. Dodge their committed attacks instead.
Do not ignore the bestiary when a fight feels impossible; the missing answer is often preparation.
Do not fight a large group in a locked-on straight line. Break the lock and reposition first.
